Chalsa-"Queen of Duars"

Chalsa is a small town situated just on the foot of the Himalayas in the Duars in Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal. This small town is surrounded by hills, tea gardens, rivers and forests. One part of the town is surrounded by Gorumara National Park and other part with Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. This small town was known as Queen of Duars in British India. Nearby forests are residence of a good collection of elephants and rhinos.

Chalsa is the administrative headquarters of the Matiali community development block of the Malbazar subdivision of Jalpaiguri District. Surrounded by hills, tea gardens, free flowing streams and dense forests, the town was called Queen of Duars during the British regime.

The region is famous for its wildlife sanctuaries, the most notable of which is Jaldapara. The forests in the Dooars have a large variety of deer, namely, the sambar, barking deer, spotted deer and the hog deer. Gorumara Wildlife Sanctuary, another haven for wildlife, is known for its flora and fauna, rich wild life, which includes elephants, guars, pigs, reptiles, birds and fishes. Buxa Tiger Reserve, covering an area of 761 sq. km, is a paradise for nature lovers and trekkers. While the peice-de-resistance is the Royal Bengal Tiger, the other animals also inhabit the region like Leopards, Elephants, Chital, Sambar, Barking deer and Malayan Giant Squirrel.


Chalsa is a few kilometers from Malbazar on the way to Dooars from Siliguri. The national highway connecting the North-East with West Bengal passes through Chalsa. From here the road to left leads to Samsing which is about 15 km.


Attractions in Chalsa

Danse forests, wildlife animals, Mithy Rivers, various migrants and Indian birds, canvas like tea gardens and also the hills are main attraction in Chalsa. Ultimately Chalsa is famous for the scenic beauty and wildlife. It is surrounded by Gorumara National Park and Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. Jaldapara National Park and Buxa Tiger Reserve are also near by Chalsa. So, this region is rich with various wildlife animals. Indian elephants, one-horned rhinoceros, and guars (Indian bison) are famous of them. A verity of floras and orchids are also available here. Near by Buxa Tiger Reserve is famous for Royal Bengal Tiger.

Chalsa is also famous for a large number of canvas like tea gardens surrounding here and there. From the balcony of a room you can enjoy the scenic beauty of hills and tea gardens. The Kurti river flows down the small hillock and tea gardens. Chalsa is quite popular to tourists, because various tourist destinations of the dooars region are quick accessible from there. So, you can travel all nearby tourist destination after halt or night stay at Chalsa.

Gorumara National Park is a National Park in northern West Bengal, India. Located in the Terai region of the Himalayan foothills, it is a medium-sized park with grasslands and forests. It is primarily known for its population of Indian Rhinoceros.


Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary:

Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest Sanctuary in India. It situated in the Nagrakata block of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. Chapramari Wildlife Reserve is close to the Gorumara National Park. Chapramari is about 30 km from Chalsa and Lataguri in West Bengal, India. A huge variety of flora and fauna covers the forests. Chapramari is famous for its elephant population.

Jaldapara National Park  :

Jaldapara National Park (earlier Jaldapara Wildlife Sanctuary) is a national park situated at the foothills of Eastern Himalayas in Alipurduar Sub-Division of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal and on the bank of river Torsa.


Buxa Tiger Reserve:

Buxa Tiger Reserve is the largest forest in North Bengal and has the second highest tiger population in West Bengal after Sunderbans. The park has a rich population of elephants, Indian bisons, leopards, many species of deer and many smaller mammals, innumerable species of birds and reptiles. Buxa is rich in bio-diversity and has a rare collection of orchids and medicinal plants.

Bindu:

Bindu is the end point of West Bengal to the north, nearby Bhutan border. The village surrounded by hills and forests. So it is famous for its scenic beauty. The hydel project on the Jaldhaka River is the first hydel project in India and also a tourist attraction at Bindu.

Murti :

Murti is situated on the bank of the River Murti is the entry point to the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and also nearby Gorumara National Park. Murti itself is a very nice tourist spot. In the river Murti, you can find out Gharials. Murti is 8 kilometers away from Chalsa.

Samsing:

Samsing is the Range Office of the Neora Valley National Park, 3kms before Suntalekhola. The drive to Samsing is a pleasure trip along meandering emerald green river, the cool shades of orange orchards, sleepy hamlets, picturesque tea gardens and the lofty Himalayas.

How to Reach:

The township of Chalsa can be reached by flights, trains and buses. Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport serving the destination. Trains are available from Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata and Siliguri that connect to the New Jalpaiguri railway station. Buses are also available from Siliguri, Jalpaiguri and Guwahati.
