Rongo
Perched on the top of a hill at an altitude of 4500 ft near the Bhutan boarder,
Rongo or Rongu serve as the Headquarter of Cinchona Plantation under Kalimpong
subdivision. Now Cinchona plantation is gradually giving way to rubber
plantation. A tiny remote village having a market, post office and few houses
in its locality, Rongo used to be a significant place for plantation and
growing medicinal plants. Rongo offers fine-looking views of adjoining hills,
dense forests and river valley of Jaldhaka.
Rongu
does not feature as one of the most famous tourist destinations of North
Bengal. But the natural beauty of this hill beauty and the hospitality of the
local people draws many a travel enthusiasts to this less known hill station.
The
population of Rongu is about 500 people. Most people are Buddhist and speak
Nepali. The population is mostly dependent on cinchona plantation for
livelihood.

The
destination offers bird’s eye view of a vast plain of Dooars with tea gardens
and forests.One of the popular trek in the Neora Valley Park begins from
Mouchuki to Rechela - uppermost point of the Park. The most daring trek in
North Bengal takes at least three days to Rechela through Bhotegarh and Thusum
covering the dense forest and end up in Pedong or Lava.

Valley National Park is situated in the Kalimpong subdivision under Darjeeling
District, West Bengal, India and was established in 1986. It spreads over an
area of 88 km and is one of the richest biological zones in the entire
Northeast.
Neora
Valley, one of the least tracts of virgin wilderness in the country sustains a
unique eco-system where tropical, sub-tropical, sub-temperate, and temperate
vegetative system still harbours a wealth of flora and fauna. The forests
consists of mixed species like rhododendron, bamboo, oak, ferns, sal etc. The
Valley also has numerous species of orchids.
River Valley of
Jaldhaka:
The
river valley at Jaldhaka is situated at about 1500 ft above sea level on the
shores of the Jaldhaka River that happens to be one of the major attractions of
this valley. People visit this place for its natural beauty that offers ample
opportunities for travellers to go for fishing and riverside picnic. The
Jaldhaka River Valley is situated in the sub-division of Kalimpong in West
Bengal and is also known for its hydroelectric power project located at a
distance of 5 km from the centralised bazaar.
How to Reach Rongo:
One
can reach from Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station viar Siliguri
along national highway 31 i.e. Dooars crossing Chalsa and turning left at
Khunia More via Chapramari, Sepchu, Gairibas. From Gairibas an uneven motorable
road turns towards left to Rongo nearly 7 kilometers to Rongo.
