Take a Trip To Mirik To Discover Its Uncorrupted Beauty.

Mirik is a picturesque tourist spot nestled in the serene hills of Darjeeling district in West Bengal, India. The name Mirik comes from the Lepcha words Mir-Yok meaning "place burnt by fire".

Nestled near the Nepal border, halfway between Siliguri and Darjeeling, is this low-profile hill station and honeymoon destination. Mirik is surrounded by an undulating carpet of tea estates, orange orchards, cardamom plantations and forests of tall, dark Japanese cedars. It is a quiet retreat that remains off most visitors’ radars. Some of Mirik’s higher hilltops offer wonderful views of morning’s first light striking Khangchendzonga (8598m).

Mirik has become a popular tourist destination for its climate, natural beauty and easy accessibility. The centre of all attraction is the Sumendu lake, surrounded by a garden on one side and pine trees on the other and linked together by an arching footbridge called Indreni Pull (Rainbow Bridge). A 3.5-km-long road encircles the lake and is used for walks with the view of Kangchenjunga on the far horizon. Boating on the quaint shikaras and pony riding are available.

What to see around

Lake Somendu

Lake Somendu is about 1.25 km. long and a 3.5 km road surrounds the lake. The lake is the main attraction of Mirik. Swimming in the lake is not advisable since the wastewater from the town falls in this lake. At the backdrop of the lake, you will get an idyllic view of Mt. Kanchenjunga and the green luster of Oak, Chestnut and Maple. Boating in this lake placid is a must to soothe the soul of a weary traveler. A stroll around the lake is highly recommended. You can also go for a horse ride around the lake.

One can get a sweeping view of the plains as well as the snow capped mountains from this viewpoint. The sunrise and sunset from here is a visual delight. The viewpoint is about 30 minutes walk from the tourist hub.
