Yuksom
is a small village in Sikkim. It is said that it was the first capital of
Sikkim.Yuksom literally means the “meeting place of the three learned monks” as
three monks who came from Tibet selected Phuntsog Namgyal as the first King of
Sikkim and gave him the title Chogyal. 'Chogyal' means “Religious King” or “the
king who rules with righteousness”. Yuksom is also one of the sacred landscape
"Demazong" (meaning a valley of rice) of four religious sites blessed
by Guru Padmasambhava, which are considered to be the four plexuses of the
human body, and Yuksom symbolically represents the 'third eye'. A real get-away
for those who want to avoid the tourist crowd.
At
an altitude of 4,200 m Dzongri is among the best trekking destinations not only
in Sikkim but also in India. The sights of the milky white peaks all around
Dzongri are bound to keep you gazing with awe.The view from this place has too
much to be recommended : a patchwork of green and gold streaked with blue -
reminiscent of an abstract etching, framed by the majestic snowcapped peaks
shining not very far away.
Dzongri Trek:
The
trek to Dzongri peak is a classic Sikkim trekking opportunity. It starts at
Yuksom and passes through the dense tropical forest of Kachenjunga National
Park. Magnificent views of mountain peaks, rhododendron forests, and the river
flowing down in the valley add to its charm. Your high energy found an
immediate resonance with the chill and thrill of Dzongri, the meeting place of
man and mountain gods.
When to Visit Dzongri
The
best time to visit Dzongri is from mid March-April, and then from September to
mid October, so as to avoid snowfall and monsoon rains. Although, owing to high
altitude, there is a definite probability of the climate taking unexpected
turns during any time of the year.
