“Yuksom and Demazong”your ultimate trekking destination in Sikkim

Yuksom is a small village in Sikkim. It is said that it was the first capital of Sikkim.Yuksom literally means the “meeting place of the three learned monks” as three monks who came from Tibet selected Phuntsog Namgyal as the first King of Sikkim and gave him the title Chogyal. 'Chogyal' means “Religious King” or “the king who rules with righteousness”. Yuksom is also one of the sacred landscape "Demazong" (meaning a valley of rice) of four religious sites blessed by Guru Padmasambhava, which are considered to be the four plexuses of the human body, and Yuksom symbolically represents the 'third eye'. A real get-away for those who want to avoid the tourist crowd.

At an altitude of 4,200 m Dzongri is among the best trekking destinations not only in Sikkim but also in India. The sights of the milky white peaks all around Dzongri are bound to keep you gazing with awe.The view from this place has too much to be recommended : a patchwork of green and gold streaked with blue - reminiscent of an abstract etching, framed by the majestic snowcapped peaks shining not very far away.

Dzongri Trek:

The trek to Dzongri peak is a classic Sikkim trekking opportunity. It starts at Yuksom and passes through the dense tropical forest of Kachenjunga National Park. Magnificent views of mountain peaks, rhododendron forests, and the river flowing down in the valley add to its charm. Your high energy found an immediate resonance with the chill and thrill of Dzongri, the meeting place of man and mountain gods.

When to Visit Dzongri

The best time to visit Dzongri is from mid March-April, and then from September to mid October, so as to avoid snowfall and monsoon rains. Although, owing to high altitude, there is a definite probability of the climate taking unexpected turns during any time of the year.

Get in

Reach here in 5 hours from Gezing using shared or private jeeps
The nearest Railway Station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP)which is about 150 km from Yuksom. From NJP , one can get book a taxi to Yuksom. Be careful to leave NJP by 11am as it takes around 6-7 hours to reach Yuksom via Jorethang. The road to Yuksom is poorly lit and it is not advisable to travel in night.

The nearest airport is in Bagdogra, 12 km west of Siliguri , about 170 km from Yuksom.

Sightsinging:

Yuksom is very close to the Kanchandzongha national park. It will take you 2 hours to trek into the wildlife sanctuary and go to a particular waterfall on the way to Dzongri. Very beautiful. You can also bathe here but will need to be careful. Its the coldest , purest and sweetest water ever!

There is a village buddhist temple where prayers happen every evening at dusk. A must to experience.

Other places are......

Bakhi

Bakhi(2740m) is located 16 km from Yuksom in West Sikkim District. It lies at an altitude of around 3100m on the Dzongri (10 km) trek route. Bakhim is a natural garden which is surrounded by dense mixed forests of magnolia, rhododendron, orchids, and ferns. Prek Chu River flows nearby.

 Tshoka

Tshoka (3400m) Tshoka is one of the ideal places to watch the sunrise over Mt. Pandim. Settlement is sparse but cultivation of various crops in summer is a common practice. It is about 2 km from Bakhim.

Thansing

Thansing is a village development committee in Nuwakot District in the Bagmati Zone of central Nepal. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 5951 people living in 1020 individual households.

Goecha La

The southeast face of Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest mountain, is viewable from the pass, which is also a base camp for those aspiring to scale the mountain. Gocha La is the ultimate trekking destination of your dream.
