Sandakphu is the highest point in West Bengal. This place is known as the best trek destination in Darjeeling Himalaya. The astounding mountain range, the abundant wildlife and the hospitality makes Sandakphu a pleasant place. It refers to the poisonous aconite plants that grow near the peak. It is popular as a trekkers' paradise. It offers the travelers an excellent view of the Khangchendzonga and the Everest group of mountain peaks in Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan.
Place of Interest at Sandakphu...
Tonglu: Tonglu is the one of the higher peaks of the Singalila Ridge and a small settlement inside the Singalila National Park in the Darjeeling district. It is a preferred destination for trekkers on the way to Sandakphu. Tonglu commands a fine view of the Nepalese Valleys and of the plains of North Bengal. From Tonglu a magnificent view of Kanchanjangha Mass is visible over the undulating slopes of green hills.
Manebhanjan: Manebhanjan is a small village located at an altitude of 7,054 ft. Maneybhanjan is the starting place of any trekking activity to Sandakphu. From Sandakphu one can easily absorb the beautiful view of four peaks - Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Lhoste. This is virtually the gateway to Singalila and Sandakphu.
Phalut Trek: Phalut is one of the highest peaks of Singalila range and located in Darjeeling district. Phalut is further 21kms from Sandakphu. This place is quite a contrast to the dense forests that are so common at the lower levels.
Kalepokhri: Kalepokhri is just about 8 kms from Sandakphu. It is a village in Nepal situated at an altitude of 3108 m. Being relatively high in altitude and on top of a ridge, there is heavy wind blowing through the village all times of the day. There are a couple of trekkers’ huts here as well. The trek from Tumling to Kalepokhri takes about 5 hours. At Kalepokhri there is a small crystal lake surrounded by pine trees and prayer flags.
