Enjoy the Versatility of Forest at Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is a reserved forest area that initially started as a game sanctuary where children took rides. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is a very beautiful and crazy forest in North Bengal. It is located on the foothills of the great Himalayas, between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It comes under Darjeeling Wildlife division and can be reached from Siliguri in 30 minutes.

Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary shelters a large population of migratory elephant for a long period of time. The sanctuary has got a tremendous importance in the forest maps of India because of a considerable number of Bengal Tiger. Despite its small size the sanctuary holds atleast 14 majestic animals (according to 2003 census). Apart from these the faunal life of the Mahananda Sanctuary comprises of gaur, leopard, spotted deer, sloth bear, barking deer, wild dog, boar, sambar, along with smaller mammals like porcupine, pangolin, jungle cat, leopard cat, civet etc. recently some hullock gibbon and black capped languor have been released in the sanctuary and they can be seen living with the company of rhesus monkeys.

colourful feathered animals

Mahananda is a home for a large number of colourful feathered animals. The list includes several species of babblers, wagtails, bee eaters, swallows, sun birds, rollers, robins, fly catchers, thrush, drongo, kites, eagles, hornbills, orioles, peacock, fouls, egrets, king fishers, wood pickers and much more.

The sanctuary is an ideal place for wildlife lovers. Several glades, hides and watchtowers have been created near natural saltlicks and streams to invite wild animals. The railway cabin in the abandoned Gulma Station inside the core area of the sanctuary has been converted into a watchtower.

Travelling to Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary

By Road: Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected by road with Darjeeling, Siliguri and other towns of North Bengal. Sukna is the gateway to the sanctuary which is located on the Siliguri-Darjeeling highway. It is just 13 Km from the Siliguri and 30 minutes drive distance from Siliguri.

By Rail: The nearest railhead is at New Jalpaiguri station, adjacent to Siliguri town. Most trains between New Delhi and Guwahati and Kolkata and Guwahati stop at New Jalpaiguri.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra(IXB), 16km from Siliguri. From NJP station or Bagdogra airport, rent a taxi to take you to Latpanchar bungalow. Do not travel in a small car. A sumo or similar car should be taken since the road, especially the last stretch, is bad.

There are no motorable roads. The vehicles can come up to the bungalow but no further. You have to walk along the forest trail. DO NOT walk along the trail without a guide since there are elephants, especially during winter time. The forest guards act as guides.
