Explore Wonderful Wildlife Sanctuary Trip at Chilapata Jungle

Chilapata Forest is a dense natural forest near Jaldapara in Dooars. It is about 20 km from Alipurduar town and is within the Jalpaiguri District. A drive through the forests is an interesting experience. Sighting of elephants are almost regular. The chief attraction at Chilapata is the "Nalraja Garh" or the fort of the Nal kings. This fort is situated deep inside the forest and has historical and archaeological importance. The fort was built in the 5th century, during the Gupta Empire and the ruins depict the heritage of the Golden Age of India. 

Major mammals recorded in Chilapata are One Horned Rhinoceros,Asian Elephant, Indian Bison or Gaur,Leopard , Lesser Cats, Hog Deer,Cheetal,Sambar, Barking Deer,Wild Boar and Hispid Hare. 18 species of amphibians including the recently-discovered Assam Painted Frog and Chilapata Frog have been recorded from Chilapata. More than Twenty species of snakes are found in here. Chilapata is well-known for its butterfly species diversity.

 Nalraja Garh :

The chief attraction at Chilapata is the "Nalraja Garh". There exist the ruins of an old fort in the dense forests at Chilapata on the east bank of the Torsa river a few miles south of the Indo-Bhutan border. It is popularly called “Nal Rajar Garh”. The Britishers called it “the Mendabari ruins”. After excavations at this place undertaken by the archaeological department have shown that these brick constructions belonged to the “Gupta Age”. It was identified to be one of the frontier fortifications of the region then known as “ Pundrabardhan Bhukti”.

How to Reach Chilapata :

Nearest Station is New Alipurduar Junction. There are several trains from Kolkata. Your best option could be Teesta -Torsah Express from Seladah or Kamrup Express from Howrah. From the station a car ride will take you to  the jungle camp.
