Enjoy weekend at “Kurseong”- Land of the White Orchids



Kurseong is a hill station (and sub-divisional town) situated in Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India. Located at an altitude of 1458 metres (4864 ft), Kurseong is just 30 km from Darjeeling. It has a pleasant climate throughout the year and the winters are not as severe as Darjeeling.

The local name of Kurseong is called "Kharsang" which in the Lepcha language means "Land of the White Orchids".

The terraced tea gardens, orchid nurseries, and verdant hill slopes are best explored either on foot or by the Toy Train which runs from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling.



Kurseong was transferred to the British in 1835 by the King of Sikkim. The town gained importance only after 1880 although Darjeeling took away the larger share of tourism. It is home to some reputed schools such as Goethals, Victoria and Dow Hill. Kurseong is a nature lover's paradise and offers some interesting treks.

Eagle’s Craig view point:



This view point is located near the town seemingly perched on a cliff. One can have a sweeping view of the surrounding mountain, hill, hamlets and slopes from here. It has a cafeteria, a watch tower and a flower garden; this place also houses the water reservoir for the entire town of Kurseong.

Forest Museum :

The forest museum is a treat for nature lovers and the ecotourist. Located on Dow Hill, the museum is maintained by the forest department and gives you rare insight into the flora and fauna that inhabit the region.

Giddapahar view point :



Located a few kilometer away from Kurseong. The place offers a wonderful view of mountains and is a great place for clicking photographs.

Giddapahar Seti Mata Temple:

This temple is carved out of an ancient rock and is dedicated to Goddess Durga. A sacred place of the Hindus.

Ambootia Temple:



This temple is located within the Ambootia Tea Estate area. It has an old temple thronged by many devotees.

Dowhill's Girls School:

 Provides a glimpse of the British era with its architecture and elegance. This school is well known for its beautiful location surrounded by pine trees and the quality of education it provides.

Victoria Boy's School:

This school was also created by the British and still maintains its Victorian looks and fame.

Grotto:



The grotto houses the statue of Virgin Mary and is located in a beautiful surrounding that takes you to another place and time. It is a peaceful place and peace is what you feel when you are there. Devotees light candles and pray to God here; it is also frequented by young couples because it offers seclusion.

Bhangzang Salamander Lake:



The Bhangzang Salamander Lake is located at a distance of 14 km from the town of Kurseong. This is a beautiful and serene lake with green-tinged waters and is home to a range of salamanders which is a rare and endangered species.

The lake is a natural haven with greenery all around and its natural grandeur had made it a popular destination among the British. Even today, though the lake is relatively unknown to tourists, local people from the nearby areas come here to enjoy a pleasant evening and the beauty of the lake and the surroundings.

Bagora:



Bagora, a quaint village, located at a height of 7100 ft., in the Darjeeling district, is not yet explored and hence it still remains unexploited. Nestled amidst serene and exotic scenery with majestic views of Mt. Kanchenjungha, this romantic getaway will not disappoint you. Bagora is also called Zero Point and has a base camp of the Indian Air Force with a helipad.

Best time to visit Kurseong:

The very essence of Kurseong is its wonderful weather. So you can visit the place any time of the year. However, it is better to skip the rainy season.

How to reach Kurseong:

The nearest airport of Kurseong is located at Bagdogra. You can avail taxis and buses from the airport to reach Kurseong, located at a distance of 60 km. The two nearest railway stations of Kurseong are located at Siliguri (50 km) and New Jalpaiguri (57 km). Taxis and buses are available from both the stations to reach Kurseong. You can also enjoy a ride of toy train from New Jalpaiguri to Kurseong, which takes around 5 hours. Kurseong is also connected by roads with Siliguri, Darjeeling, Mirik, Kalimpong and Gangtok.
